To get a New Mexico Teaching License, you have to take the NMTA.

The NMTA are the New Mexico Teacher Assessments.

The New Mexico Public Education Department is in charge of the NMTA.


The NMTA assess whether you have the necessary skills to be a teacher in New Mexico schools.

NYS Teacher Certification

NYS Teacher Certification – What is NYSTCE?

“NYS Teacher Certification” stands for New York State teacher certification.

In order to get NYS teacher certification, you have to take the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations (NYSTCE).


The NYSTCE includes tests for the certification of teaching assistants, teachers, and school administrators.

Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST):

North Carolina Teaching License

North Carolina Teaching License – Testing

If you want to get a North Carolina teaching license, you will need to take the Praxis tests.

You may have to take the Praxis Core before you start your college or university teacher education program.


The Praxis Core is a basic skills test containing sections in reading, writing, and math.

North Carolina Teaching License – Exemptions

Anyone who meets any one of the following conditions may get an exemption from taking the exam:

  • a total SAT Verbal and Quantitative score of 1100 or higher makes you exempt from taking the entire Praxis Core exam.
  • with a total SAT Verbal and Quantitative score of less than 1100, but with a score of at least 550 on the Verbal test, you are exempt from the Praxis Core test sections in Reading and Writing.
  • with a total SAT Verbal and Quantitative score of less than 1100, but with a score of at least 550 on the Math test, you are exempt from taking the Praxis Core in Math.
  • a composite ACT score of 24 or higher makes you exempt from taking the entire Praxis Core exam.
  • with a composite ACT score of less than 24, but with a score of at least 24 on the English test, you are exempt from the Praxis Core sections in Reading and Writing.
  • with a composite ACT score of less than 24, but a score of at least 24 on the Math test, you are exempt from taking the Praxis Core in Math.

To get a North Carolina teaching license, you will also need to take the Praxis subject test for each of your teaching areas.

North Carolina Teaching License – Initial Licenses

In order to receive an initial Professional Educator’s (SP1) License, you must have completed a state approved teacher education program from an accredited college or university.

This initial North Carolina teaching license is also called the “Standard Professional Educator’s License.”

These teaching licenses are for teachers with up to two years of teaching experience.

The licenses are valid for three years.

North Carolina Teaching License – Out-of-State

Out-of-state applicants must have:

  • completed another state’s approved route to licensure
  • hold the federal “Highly Qualified” designation

In order to apply for your first North Dakota Teaching License, you will need to:

  • Complete a bachelor’s degree program that includes modules in professional education and general studies
    • The State of North Dakota requires 26 semester hours or 40 quarter hours of professional education courses for secondary school teachers.
    • The State of North Dakota requires  34 semester hours or 50 quarter hours for elementary teachers.
  • Maintain a 2.5 overall grade point average or better
  • Successfully complete 10 weeks of full-time student teaching in their subject area and grade level
  • Undergo fingerprinting screening and complete a background check
  • Provide positive recommendations from your recent supervisors
  • Pay all fees to the state
  • Pass the Praxis subject tests for your teaching area or areas

Ohio Teaching License

Ohio Teaching License – Testing

In order to get an Ohio teaching license, you will need to pass the following examinations:

  • Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) test for your grade level
  • Praxis subject area test for your licensing area



Your scores for the PLT or Praxis will automatically be sent to the Ohio Department of Education if you take your tests in the state of Ohio.

If you take the tests in another state, you should select the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) code as a score recipient when registering for the tests.

In the event that you forget to list ODE as a score recipient at registration, you will need to pay for an additional score report request.

You will need to take only one PLT test during your entire teaching career.

Oklahoma Subject Area Tests (OSAT):

The OSAT is a subject-area knowledge test.

Praxis Teacher Certification Test – Oregon

Praxis formerly offered all of Oregon’s subject knowledge tests.

In the past, teachers sometimes erroneously took a Praxis subject matter test before checking that is was still the correct test.

So, you have to be sure that you are taking the correct exam prior to registering to take the exam.

Oregon Teaching License – Other Exams

In addition to the subject knowledge exam, you must also take the two following exams in the state of Oregon:

  1. Civil Rights Exam
  2. Basic Skills Exams

You have to submit a passing score on the approved civil rights exam before receiving an initial Oregon teaching license.

Information on the civil rights exam, called the Protecting Student and Civil Rights in the Educational Environment exam, is only offered through ORELA.

If you have a license from another state, you may be given additional time to complete the Oregon civil rights exam.

Pennsylvania Teaching Certificate – Further Information

If you are going to teach grades Pre-K to 4, Special Education Pre-K to 8, or 7 to 12, you are required to take the PAPA test plus the PECT test for your teaching certificate.

On the other hand, if you are going to teach in middle school or high school, you may have to take the Core Assessment Tests and Concentration Tests for your subject areas.

For teachers who are Instructional I and Educational Specialist I candidates, the Praxis Core can be used instead of the PAPA test.

Teach in Rhode Island – Initial Certificate

For initial certification in Rhode Island, you have to:

South Carolina Teaching Certificate – Further Information

There are exceptions for testing for alternate route teachers who meet the “alternative route” criteria for teacher certification.

If you have a valid certificate from another state or from the Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS), you can get certified to teach under South Carolina’s reciprocity agreement.

However, if you are going to apply for certification under the Career and Technology Education Work-based Certification path, you are not eligible for reciprocity.

In order for reciprocity to be granted, you have to provide a completed application.

If you are eligible for reciprocity, you will not be required to take the subject area tests for your area of licensure.


Further testing may be needed to meet federal requirements.

South Dakota Teaching License

South Dakota Teaching License – Testing

In order to apply for your first South Dakota teaching license, you have to:

The South Dakota Department of Education can issue a provisional one-year teaching certificate, which allows a teacher one year to complete the required Praxis tests.

Be sure to use the correct code number for your preparing institution on your test registration form.

Information about the college or university that is recommending you for certification must be written in the “Attending Institution” section of the application form.

If you have a current South Dakota certificate and want to add another subject area, you have to pass the Praxis exam for the subject area you wish to add to your certification.

It is your responsibility to register for the correct assessment for the subject area in which you want to get licensed.

Not all teaching areas have subject-specific tests.

In order to get licensed in areas without subject-specific exams, coursework must be completed.

Out-of-state applicants

Teachers who hold valid teaching certificates from out of state must submit passing scores for the Praxis subject area test.

Out-of-state applicants have to pass a Praxis subject area test to attain five-year certification.

The South Dakota Department of Education may issue a one-year certificate.

The one-year certificate allows out-of-state teachers extra time to complete the Praxis subject area test.

Tennessee Teaching License – Testing

In order to apply for a Tennessee teaching license, you have to take and pass two Praxis tests.

To receive an initial Tennessee teaching license, you have to take and pass the Praxis exam for the subject area or areas in which you are seeking endorsement.


You are also required to submit passing scores for the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Praxis exam.

If you are looking to become licensed in any of the following areas, you need to take the Praxis subject area exam only. You are not required to take the Praxis PLT exam:

If you want to apply under one of the alternate routes, you have to meet the same testing requirements as candidates in traditional programs.

Exemptions from Testing

If you hold a current license from a state recognized through the Tennessee Interstate Educator Certification and License Agreement, you may be exempt from Praxis testing.

If you are an out-of-state applicant and you have completed your college degree in education for your endorsement area, you may be able to get an exemption from testing.

Teachers who have taught for at least three out of the last seven years may be exempt from testing.

You may also be exempt from testing it you have held a full educator license in any other state and have not been employed as a teacher in Tennessee.

Utah Teaching License – Requirements

To get your Utah teaching license and become certified as a teacher in the state of Utah, you must:

  • have a bachelor’s degree

If you are in-state, you can file an application using the online interface of the Utah State Office of Education (USOE) website.

Washington State Teacher Certificate – Testing Requirements

In order to get an initial Washington State Teacher Certificate, all prospective teachers must meet the testing requirements.

You have to submit passing test scores showing evidence of basic skills, as well as of subject area or content knowledge.

There are two alternatives to show the state of Washington that you have the basic skills in order to become a Wasington educator.

The first alternative is the Washington Educator Skills Test (Basic), also called the WEST-B examination.

Instead of taking either of the two above tests, you can take three other possible examinations.

The state of Wastington also accepts results from the following examinations in lieu of WEST-B or Praxis Core scores:

  • CBEST (California Basic Educational Skills Test)
  • NES Academic Skills Test
  • NBPTS (National Board Certification)

For the basic skills testing requirement, you must take all of the parts of the above tests in reading, writing, and mathematics.
