North Dakota Teaching License – Initial License

In order to apply for your first North Dakota Teaching License, you will need to:

  • Complete a bachelor’s degree program that includes modules in professional education and general studies
    • The State of North Dakota requires 26 semester hours or 40 quarter hours of professional education courses for secondary school teachers.
    • The State of North Dakota requires  34 semester hours or 50 quarter hours for elementary teachers.
  • Maintain a 2.5 overall grade point average or better
  • Successfully complete 10 weeks of full-time student teaching in their subject area and grade level
  • Undergo fingerprinting screening and complete a background check
  • Provide positive recommendations from your recent supervisors
  • Pay all fees to the state
  • Pass the Praxis subject tests for your teaching area or areas
