ELM Test Information

The ELM Mathematics Test contains the following types of questions:

• Number and data – approximately 35% of the questions

• Algebra – approximately 35% of the questions

• Geometry and graphing – approximately 30% of the questions

There are 50 questions in total on the ELM math exam.

You will have 90 minutes to take the ELM Test.

Number and data questions cover the following skills:
• Positive and negative integers – including how to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as understanding how to order numbers from highest to lowest or lowest to highest
• Mathematical equivalents and representing a value in more than one way – for example, converting a fraction to a decimal or percentage
• Whole numbers and their properties
• Ratios and proportion
• Decimals and percentages
• Operations on fractions
• Finding common factors and multiples
• Reading and interpreting graphs, pie charts, tables, histograms, and number lines
• Drawing conclusions based on the data provided
• Calculating mean and median

Algebra questions cover:
• Evaluating, interpreting, and simplifying algebraic expressions
• Linear equations and inequalities
• Understanding relationships among variables
• Finding equivalent expressions
• Understanding properties of exponents
• Square roots, cube roots, and other radicals
• Solving simultaneous equations
• Absolute value
• Binomials and polynomials
• Linear, quadratic, and rational equations

Geometry and graphing questions cover these skills:
• Slopes, midpoints, and intercepts
• Working with angles
• Solving problems on geometric shapes
o Describing or drawing figures
o Interpreting relationships between figures
o Right triangle geometry
o Circles
o Practical problems on angles, area, and volume
• Pythagorean Theorem
• Calculate perimeter, area, and volume of geometric shapes
• Understanding ratio and similarity of corresponding figures
• Graphing linear and quadratic functions
