Which of the FTCE Exams Do I Need?

There are three different FTCE examinations:

  • General Knowledge (described above)
  • Subject Area Exams
  • Professional Education

Depending upon the teaching candidate’s background, one, two, or all three of the above certification tests may be required.

Professional Education (PEd)

Teaching candidates applying for a Professional Certificate may need to take the Professional Education (PEd) Test.

The Professional Education test is normally given in the afternoon and you will need the entire afternoon to take it.

You will need to arrive for the PEd at 1:00 PM and the testing time is two and a half hours.

The PEd test is a test of pedagogy and professional practices.

Prospective teachers may combine taking an FTCE subject area examination in the morning and the PEd test in the afternoon on the same date.

However, in certain cases, the PEd test is only offered in the morning, so in that case, you would need to check your admission ticket carefully.

Subject area exams (SAE)

The subject area exam (SAE) is required for academic and some vocational subject areas.

The SAE exams measure subject area knowledge and usually consist of multiple-choice questions.

English and foreign language teachers will also be required to write an essay.

Foreign language applicants may also be required to have an oral interview.

SAEs are normally given in the morning, beginning at 8:30 AM and finishing at noon.

Like the PEd, the testing time for the SAE is normally two and a half hours.
