What is the purpose of the exam?

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery assesses your skills for a career in the military.

What is the AFQT?

Your AFQT score for the examination consists of four of the sections of the complete exam:

  • Word Knowledge
  • Paragraph Comprehension
  • Arithmetic Reasoning
  • Mathematics Knowledge

The AFQT (Armed Forces Qualifying Test) score is the most important score for entrance into the military.

You will need to have a certain AFQT score in order to be eligible to enlist.

Your AFQT score is also used to decide what kinds of jobs you will be eligible for in the armed services.

Since your AFQT score is so important, you may want to devote extra attention to studying for the AFQT sections of the exam.

Format of the Exam

The exam is available in both computer and in traditional pencil-and-paper format.

The complete pencil-and-paper version has eight sections, while the complete computer-assisted version has nine sections.

ASVAB Testing Locations

You should enquire at your testing location to see which version of the exam they offer.

If you are still in high school, you should ask your guidance counselor if the exam is going to be offered at your school.

You can also take the examination at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) or at a Mobile Examination Team Site (METS.)

Exam Scores

Your guidance counselor or testing officer can also provide information about how you will receive your score report.

You can retake the test if you are not satisfied with your score.

However, there are restrictions associated with retaking the exam.

So, it will be to your benefit to be well-prepared for your exam when you first take it.
