Ohio Teaching License – Testing
In order to get an Ohio teaching license, you will need to pass the following examinations:
- Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) test for your grade level
- Praxis subject area test for your licensing area
Your scores for the PLT or Praxis will automatically be sent to the Ohio Department of Education if you take your tests in the state of Ohio.
If you take the tests in another state, you should select the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) code as a score recipient when registering for the tests.
In the event that you forget to list ODE as a score recipient at registration, you will need to pay for an additional score report request.
You will need to take only one PLT test during your entire teaching career.

In case you decide to add new subject areas to your Ohio teaching license, you will require additional Praxis subject tests for those areas.
We recommend that you contact the school, college, or department of education of the institution you are going to attend for further information on testing.
