Utah Teaching License – Praxis Exams

In order to get a Utah Teaching License, you will have to take and pass the Praxis subject area test for the subject area that you want to teach.

In addition, you will need to take and pass the Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) exam for your teaching level.


You may also be required to take and pass the Praxis Core examination before being accepted into your bachelor’s degree program.

The Praxis Core examination tests your basic skills in English, reading, and math.

Utah Teaching License – Requirements

To get your Utah teaching license and become certified as a teacher in the state of Utah, you must:

  • have a bachelor’s degree
  • take a teacher preparation course at an accredited college or university
  • take and pass the required Praxis tests, as mentioned above
In-state teacher certificate applications

If you are in-state, you can file an application using the online interface of the Utah State Office of Education (USOE) website.

You should check with your college or university to be sure that your application is correct and complete before you submit it.

Out-of-state teacher certificate applications

If you are out-of-state, you should submit the following with your application for your Utah teaching license:

  • official transcripts of all your coursework
  • a recommendation letter from your college or university
  • your Praxis subject area score report
  • a photocopy of your driver’s license from your current state
  • a record of your teaching experience
  • your background check
Foreign teacher certificate applications

If you are a foreign applicant, you will need to do the following:

  • show evidence of your English language ability
  • undergo an evaluation of your foreign teaching credentials
  • complete a background check
  • submit passing scores for the relevant Praxis tests
Alternative route teacher certificate applications

If you have a bachelor’s degrees in subject areas (such as math or science, for example) but do not have a degree in education, you can apply to teach through the alternative route.

Career and technical teacher certificate applications

This is another alternative path to teacher certification in Utah, with work experience and education components.
