NYS Teacher Certification – What is NYSTCE?

“NYS Teacher Certification” stands for New York State teacher certification.

In order to get NYS teacher certification, you have to take the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations (NYSTCE).


The NYSTCE includes tests for the certification of teaching assistants, teachers, and school administrators.

NYS Teacher Certification – Format of NYSTCE

Here is some information on the format of the tests.

Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST):

  • multiple-choice questions
  • a written assignment

Elementary Assessment of Teaching Skills Written (ATS–W):

  • multiple-choice questions
  • a written assignment on professional and pedagogical knowledge at the Early Childhood and Childhood levels

Secondary Assessment of Teaching Skills Written (ATS–W):

  • multiple-choice questions
  • a written assignment for Middle Childhood (grades 5–9) and High School (grades 7–12) levels

Content Specialty Tests (CSTs):

  • multiple-choice questions
  • a written assignment

CSTs for languages other than English include listening and speaking sections.

The tests identify whether you have the skills required of teachers in New York State schools.

Test questions are created using textbooks, as well as state learning standards and teacher certification standards.

New York State teachers, teacher educators, and content specialists help to develop the NYSTCE tests.

NYS Teacher Certification – Subject Tests

To get NYS teacher certification in most subject areas, you need to pass:

  1. the Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST)
  2. the elementary or secondary version of the Assessment of Teaching Skills-Written (ATS-W)
  3.  and a Content Specialty Test (CST) in your subject area of certification
NYS Teacher Certification – Further Information

If you want to add a bilingual education extension to your existing teaching certificate, you have to pass the BEA.

Teaching assistants need to pass the Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills (ATAS).
