Minnesota Teaching License – MTLE

To get a Minnesota teaching license, you will need to take the MTLE.

The Minnesota Teacher Licensure Examination (MTLE) is the required assessment for basic skills.

There are also MTLE’s for pedagogical and subject-area knowledge for K–12 teachers in the state of Minnesota.


You have to have  passing scores for the MTLE basic skills test, as well as pedagogy and subject-area tests to teach in Minnesota.

The basic skills test includes examinations in reading, writing, and math.

You are given 60 minutes to complete the basic skills reading test, 90 minutes for the writing test, and 75 minutes for the math test.

Minnesota Teaching License – Pedagogy Tests

Pedagogy tests are given for Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, and Secondary Education.

Each one of the pedagogy tests lasts for 60 minutes.

Minnesota Teaching License – Other Tests

Further information on the subject-area tests, also known as the content-area tests, is provided on the official MTLE examination website.

For licensed teachers wishing to add another area to their licenses, the subject knowledge test in the new area will be required.
