Michigan Teacher Certification – MTTC

To get Michigan teacher certification, you will need to pass the Michigan Test of Teacher Certification, also called the MTTC.

The MTTC Test has a basic skills test and subject-area tests.

The basic skills test has multiple-choice questions in the reading and math subtests.


There is a short answer assignment in the basic skills writing test.

For teachers of foreign languages, the MTTC also contains a World Languages Test.

Michigan Teacher Certification – Test information

Subject-area tests contain multiple-choice questions.

The world language tests contain multiple-choice questions, as well as short answer assignments.

Some questions are included in the test as pilot questions for future exams.

The pilot questions are not counted towards your score.

Michigan Teacher Certification – Application Information

In order to get your first Michigan teacher certificate, you have to:

  • complete a state approved teacher preparation program
  • pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) subject-area and basic skills exams

Your initial teaching certificate is valid for up to 6 years.

If you are applying from out-of-state, you will need to have completed an approved educator program from a college or university.


Once you have completed the out-of-state program, you can apply for Michigan teacher certification.

Out-of-state applications will be evaluated by the Office of Professional Preparation Services (OPPS).
