Initial Alaska Teacher Certification

In order to qualify for initial Alaska teacher certification, you must have completed a teacher preparation program and have a bachelor’s degree.

Alternative teacher certification is granted in Alaska on condition that you complete your teaching program within 2 years of obtaining your initial teaching certificate.


Your initial teaching certificate will be valid for three years from the date it is issued.

You must also complete a multicultural requirement within two years of obtaining your teaching certificate.

In order to receive Alaska teacher certification, you will need to take an exam before you file your application.

Teachers in Alaska usually need to take the Praxis Core in order to obtain their teaching certificates.

Alaska Teacher Certification – How to Apply

The Alaska Education and Early Development office (EED) must receive your Praxis passing scores for reading, writing, and mathematics before you submit your application.

Test scores must be sent to the Alaska EED directly by Education Testing Services (ETS).

Besides the Praxis, Alaska also accepts teacher certification tests from other states.

Alaska Teacher Certification – Further Information

The Alaska Department of Education and Early Development office is in charge of teacher certificates and teaching certification exams.

The State of Alaska has separate requirements for professional and masters teaching certificates, as well as for early childhood, special education, handicapped, gifted, and vocational teaching.
