Louisiana Teaching Certificate – Testing

In order to receive a Louisiana teaching certificate, you have to do the following:

  • Earn a bachelor’s degree
  • Complete a teacher preparation program at a college or university or an alternative route of certification
  • Successfully complete the Praxis Core sub-tests in reading, writing, and mathematics
  • Pass the Praxis test for your subject area
  • Take and pass the Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) exam or another pedagogy exam

Louisiana Teaching Certificate for Out-of-State Teachers

There are separate requirements for getting a Louisiana teaching certificate if you are an out-of-state teacher.

If you have completed a teacher preparation program out of state, and/or have a teaching certificate in another state, you may qualify for an Out-of-State Certificate.

The Louisiana Out-of-State Teaching Certificate is valid for three years.


When you receive a Louisiana Out-of-State Teaching Certificate, it is not renewable.
