Kentucky Teaching License – Testing
To get a Kentucky teaching license, you have to complete a teacher preparation program that includes student teaching.
For your first Kentucky teaching certificate, you will need to:
- Complete an approved teacher preparation program
- Pass the appropriate Praxis subject area test
- Complete the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program
- File the appropriate application form and pay the fees
- Check whether you are eligible for any alternative routes to Kentucky educator certification
In addition, you may have to take the Praxis Core Skills Test in reading, writing, and math as part of admission to your teacher preparation course.

Kentucky Teaching License – Further Information
When you apply for your Kentucky teaching license, you will need to submit the following:
- A completed application form
- Official undergraduate or graduate transcripts
- Proof of full-time classroom teaching experience at the appropriate grade level
- Passing scores for the Praxis subject area tests for each area of certification
- Recommendation letter from your college or university
- If you have less than two years of full-time teaching experience, you also have to submit a Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) test score
Your application should be sent to the Education Professional Standards Board for teaching certification in the state of Kentucky
The state of Kentucky requires a recommendation from the college or university where you have received your instruction.
The recommendation should describe the specific teacher preparation program that you have completed, the grades achieved, the degree that was earned, and the completion date of the program.
There are separate application requirements for out-of-state teaching certificate applicants.
