Georgia Teacher Certification – Testing

In order to get Georgia teacher certification, you will have to take the GACE exams.

The GACE evaluates whether you have the knowledge and skills to teach in Georgia public schools.

Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE)

The GACE exams measure your knowledge and skills in relation to established standards.


The exams do not indicate your performance in relation to the performance of other candidates.

The passing score for each test is established by the Georgia Professional Standards Committee.

There are different types of GACE examinations.

Assessments offered by the GACE program include:

  • Basic Skills Assessment
  • Content Assessments
  • Professional Pedagogy Assessment
  • Educational Leadership Assessment
  • Paraprofessional Assessment

Georgia Teacher Certification – GACE Basic Skills

The Basic Skills assessment evaluates your skills in reading, mathematics, and writing.

The basic skills test has three parts: reading, writing, and math.

The reading and mathematics basic skills tests have multiple choice questions.

The basic skills writing test consists of multiple choice questions and a writing task.

Georgia Teacher Certification – Other Exams

The content assessments test your subject area knowledge.

The Professional Pedagogy test evaluates your knowledge of student development and learning, instruction, and assessment.

The pedagogy exam also tests your knowledge professional roles and responsibilities.

The pedagogy assessment is not needed if you have completed an approved teacher  preparation program.


The Educational Leadership and Paraprofessional Assessments are for school administrators and paraprofessionals.

Georgia Teacher Certification – Further Information

Committees of Georgia educators review and approve all GACE test questions.

The GACE program works with the Georgia Professional Standards Committee.

The examinationa are based on state and national standards and on state standards for the student curriculum.
