The TExES exam assesses the teaching applicant’s knowledge in his or her subject area.

Teachers need to take the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills Test (TEKs), which is the main part of the TExES exam.

TExES Exam – Subject Areas

There are TExES subject area exams in the following subjects:

  • Science
  • English Language and Reading Skills
  • Spanish
  • Other Languages
  • Technical Education
  • Fine Arts
  • Mathematics
  • Technology Applications
  • Social Studies

All of the TExES tests have multiple-choice questions.

Some tests also have open-ended or short-response style questions.

TExES Exam – EPP’s

TExES exam preparation and study help can be obtained through an Educator Preparation Program (EPP).

It may be possible for you to take your TExES exam through your EPP.

Further information about the tests can be found on the Texas Education Agency (TEA) website:

Official Texas Education Agency (TEA) Website

TExES Exam – Texas Teacher Certification Programs

There are various types of Texas teacher certification programs:

  • Initial – a bachelors degree program with student teaching
  • University Post Baccalaureate – a program that you can take after earning a bachelor’s degree in order to obtain certification
  • Alternative Certification Program – a nontraditional Educator Preparation Program which may include additional course work, professional development, and/or mentoring and supervision

Your Educator Preparation Program will give you more information about which program to follow.

The EPP can also provide approval for you to take your certification test.

Out-of-State/Out-of-Country Applicants

If you are a certified teacher in another state or country and want to be certified in the same subject area, the TEA must review your teaching credentials.

To begin the review process, go to the TEA website and create a profile.  Then prepare the application online and submit the supporting documents by postal mail to TEA.

When your credentials have been reviewed, you will be sent information telling you which tests you need to take and how to register.

Certification-by-Exam Candidates

If you have a bachelor’s degree and a Texas teaching certificate, you can add certification areas in different subjects by successfully taking the examination for the area you wish to add.

Further information about Educator Preparation Program and Certification Alternatives is available on the TEA website at the link above.

Formerly known as the Praxis 1, Praxis I, or PPST (Pre-Professional Skills Test), the exam is now called the Praxis Core Exam.

The Praxis Core Mathematics Test contains the following types of questions:

  • Algebra and Functions – 17 questions
  • Geometry – 11 questions
  • Statistics and Probability – 11 questions

There are 56 questions in total on the Praxis Core math exam.

If you take the test on the computer, an on-screen calculator will be provided for you.

You will have 85 minutes to take the Praxis Core Math Test.

Praxis Core – Reading and Writing

The reading (5712) and writing (5722) parts of the Praxis Core exam have questions on:

  1. reading comprehension
  2. sentence construction
  3. research skills
  4. grammar
  5. punctuation
  6. style

If you need help with reading and writing for the Praxis Test, please go to our free exercises by clicking on the “Reading Skills” and “Essay Writing” tabs in the menu.

Why Do I Have to Take the Praxis Tests?

If you are planning on a career as an educator, you may need to take the Praxis Core Tests two times in your teaching career.

Some colleges and universities require Praxis Test Scores for admission into their programs.

So, you might need to take the Praxis Exam before you apply for college.

In addition, some states require Praxis Test scores before they will grant you a teaching license.

You may therefore need to take the exams again when you apply for certification with your state board of education.

The scores from these exams are required because the tests assess skills that are required of teachers.

For instance, you will need to understand math in order to calculate grades for students.

You will need to read well in order to instruct your students and in order to understand reports from the Department of Education in your state.

You will also need to know how to express your thought in writing in order to write comments on student progress.

Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators – Official Website

What are the GACE Assessments?

The purpose of the GACE is to assess the work-related skills of Georgia public school educators.

The program checks whether teachers have the necessary knowledge and skills in order to teach in Georgia schools.

The examination is based on state and national standards for the preparation of educators and on the state of Georgia Performance Standards for the student curriculum.

The examination measures the candidate’s knowledge and skills in relation to established standards, instead of in relation to the performance of other candidates.

All test questions have been reviewed and approved by committees of Georgia educators.

The passing score for each test is established by the Georgia Professional Standards Committee.

What’s included on the GACE?

The GACE testing program includes the following examinations:

  • Basic Skills Assessment for Program Admission
  • Content Assessments
  • Georgia Educator Ethics
  • Educational Leadership Assessment
  • Paraprofessional Assessment

You will take the tests on a computer.

Candidates usually have to take a subject-area test in addition to the Basic Skills Tests.

The content assessments cover a variety of subject knowledge areas.

The ethics examination evaluates ethical decision making in learning, instruction, and assessment.

The leadership exam tests knowledge of professional roles and responsibilities.

The Educational Leadership and Paraprofessional Assessments will be required for school administrators and for paraprofessionals working in Title I schools, respectively.

Foreign language applicants may also be required to have an oral interview.

SAEs are normally given in the morning, beginning at 8:30 AM and finishing at noon.

Like the PEd, the testing time for the SAE is normally two and a half hours.

What is the purpose of the exam?

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery assesses your skills for a career in the military.

What is the AFQT?

Your AFQT score for the examination consists of four of the sections of the complete exam:

  • Word Knowledge
  • Paragraph Comprehension
  • Arithmetic Reasoning
  • Mathematics Knowledge

The AFQT (Armed Forces Qualifying Test) score is the most important score for entrance into the military.

You will need to have a certain AFQT score in order to be eligible to enlist.

Your AFQT score is also used to decide what kinds of jobs you will be eligible for in the armed services.

Since your AFQT score is so important, you may want to devote extra attention to studying for the AFQT sections of the exam.

Format of the Exam

The exam is available in both computer and in traditional pencil-and-paper format.

The complete pencil-and-paper version has eight sections, while the complete computer-assisted version has nine sections.

ASVAB Testing Locations

You should enquire at your testing location to see which version of the exam they offer.

If you are still in high school, you should ask your guidance counselor if the exam is going to be offered at your school.

You can also take the examination at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) or at a Mobile Examination Team Site (METS.)

Exam Scores

Your guidance counselor or testing officer can also provide information about how you will receive your score report.

You can retake the test if you are not satisfied with your score.

However, there are restrictions associated with retaking the exam.

So, it will be to your benefit to be well-prepared for your exam when you first take it.
