Arizona Teacher Certification – Testing

The Arizona teacher certification test is called the Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessment (AEPA).

The AEPA certification test for new teachers has three parts:

  • Professional knowledge tests
  • Subject knowledge test
  • Test on the constitutions of the United States and the state of Arizona

These three parts are required of all new teachers applying for certification in Arizona.


Arizona Teacher Certification – Basic Skills

The State of Arizona Department of Education does not require  a basic skills test in order to get an Arizona teaching certificate.

However, you may need to pass the APEA Basic Skills test before you can begin your education  degree program.

Arizona Teacher Certification – Subject Areas

Teaching certificates are available in the areas of Early Childhood, Elementary, Secondary, Special Education, Arts Education Pre K-12 (Art, Drama, Dramatic Arts, Music), and Career & Technical Education.

Other Certificates are available in Adult Education, Athletic Coaching, Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, Teacher Intern, and Substitute Teaching.

If you are going to teach in Arizona, you may also wish to consider getting a teaching endorsement.

Endorsements are attachments to teaching certificates and indicate areas of specialization.
