New Mexico Teaching License – NMTA

To get a New Mexico Teaching License, you have to take the NMTA.

The NMTA are the New Mexico Teacher Assessments.

The New Mexico Public Education Department is in charge of the NMTA.


The NMTA assess whether you have the necessary skills to be a teacher in New Mexico schools.

The New Mexico Teacher Assessments program includes the following tests:

  • Basic Skills
  • Teacher Competency
  • Content Knowledge Assessments

New Mexico Teaching License – Basic Skills

The Basic Skills test contains 100 multiple-choice questions and a short-response task.

Reading comprehension, writing, and math are the skill areas tested in the Basic Skills test.

New Mexico Teaching License – Teacher Competency

The Teacher Competency tests have 75 multiple-choice questions, three short-answer tasks, and one extended-answer task.

There are three versions of the Teacher Competency tests:

  • Early Childhood Teacher
  • Elementary Teacher
  • Secondary Teacher
New Mexico Teaching License – Content Knowledge

The Content Knowledge Assessments consist of twenty-four different exams that evaluate subject area knowledge in various fields.

The state uses the Public Education Department Teacher Competencies and Indicators to decide upon the skill areas on the exams.

The NMTA compares your score to set standards, rather than by comparison to other candidate’s exam scores.
