Montana Teaching License – Testing
If you want to get a Montana teaching license, you will usually not have to take any certification exams.
All that is required is to hold a bachelor’s degree and to have completed an teacher preparation program.
Montana Teaching License – HQT
However, there are testing requirements if you want to apply as Highly Qualified Teachers.
The federal highly qualified teacher (HQT) regulations require evidence of content knowledge.
This shows that you will be able to teach core academic subjects.
There are separate requirements for “Highly Qualified Status” for elementary and secondary school educators.
HQT – Elementary Teachers
Elementary Teachers applying fora Montana teaching license will qualify for a “Highly Qualified Teacher” if they:
- hold at a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university
- have completed a professional teacher preparation program accredited by the Montana Board of Public Education
- submit the required scores on their subject area test, taken as part of their educator preparation program
- obtain a Montana license based on endorsement by an accredited professional educational unit
- teach in their licensed subject area
The subject area test for “Highly Qualified Status” for elementary teachers includes an examination of subject area knowledge and skills.
HQT – Secondary Teachers
The requirements for “Highly Qualified Status ” in a Montana teaching license for Secondary Teachers are the following:
- a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university
- completion of a Montana Board of Public Education accredited professional educator preparation program
- obtain recommendation for licensure, granted by the accredited professional educational unit they have completed
- hold a Montana license and endorsement
- teach in the licensed subject area
You may also have to take a subject knowledge test.
