Maryland Teaching Certificate – Initial Certificate
To get your first Maryland teaching certificate, you need to:
- Have a bachelor’s degree or higher
- Complete an approved or alternate teacher education program at an accredited college or university
- Submit passing scores on the Praxis Core Test, or the ACT, SAT, or GRE
- Take and pass the Praxis subject area for your teaching area
- Take and pass a pedagogy exam, such as the Praxis PTL
Maryland Teaching Certificate – Praxis Exams
You can take the subtests for the Praxis Core individually in reading, writing, and math.
Alternatively, you can take the entire Praxis Core at one sitting and submit a composite score.
The state of Maryland accepts scores from other exams, apart from the Praxis.
The above tests may be taken at any test site in the United States.

Foreign language teacghers may submit ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) scores in lieu of Praxis subject exam scores.
Alternative exams may also be taken in other certification areas since there are other national and state-approved tests.
