Kansas Teaching License – Testing

You will need to take the Praxis examinations to get your Kansas teaching license.

Before going to college or university, you may be required to take the Praxis Core tests.


The Praxis Core is a basic skills test in reading, writing, and math.

When you apply for your Kansas teaching license, you will also have to take the Praxis subject area test for your teaching area.

To get your first Kansas teaching certificate, you need to take the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Praxis tests.

Be sure to choose the right PLT test for your specialization or level of teaching.

If you want to add a subject area, you will need to take the Praxis subject test for your new area.

To teach in Kansas, you must have a Kansas teaching license.

A teaching license requires completion of teacher preparation program in the subject area that you want to teach.

The Kansas State Board of Education sets the requirements for teacher certification in the state of Kansas.

So, teacher preparation programs must be approved by the Kansas State Board of Education.


Your teacher preparation program can be part of a bachelor’s degree or a post-baccalaureate program.

You  can find information on licensing, download application forms, and look for jobs on the State of Kansas website.

To get your first Kansas teaching certificate, you will need to submit a fingerprint card.

You also need to successfully undergo a background check.
