Idaho Teaching Certificate – Initial License
To get your first Idaho teaching certificate, you need to do the following:
- Hold a bachelor’s or advanced degree
- Complete a state-approved educator preparation program or alternative educator certification program
- Undergo a criminal background check
In addition, you will also need to meet one of the following requirements:
- Take and pass the required Praxis exams in your teaching subject areas
- Hold National Board for Professional Standards Teaching Certification (NBPSTC)
- Obtain Highly Qualified status in your certification area
Highly Qualified status is defined by the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act.
The Idaho Teaching Certificate is also called the Idaho Teaching License.

These assessments ensure that qualified teachers are employed in Idaho’s schools.
Idaho Teaching Certificate – Further Information
If you are from out of state and have a current teaching certificate, you can request a waiver from testing.
Waivers can be granted upon providing evidence of passing an approved exam or by holding a valid NBPSTC certificate.
For teaching in Idaho for grades kindergarten through grade 12, you will also need to take an exam in literacy.
Areas included in the comprehensive literacy assessment are:
- phonology
- phonics
- fluency
- vocabulary
- comprehension
- writing, assessment
- intervention strategies
To receive your first Idaho teaching license, you have to demonstrate technology skills and classroom management.
The technology skills tests evaluate an understanding of the technology.
They also assess your ability to apply strategies for the using technology in a classroom environment.
Each Idaho school is accountable for evaluating teaching candidates in their teacher preparation programs.
